Stay Tuned

STAY TUNED: the WOMR Member Newsletter, Year 1, Issue 3, February 2010

Greetings.   Things are hopping at WOMR.  Events keep getting added to our calendar.  If you didn’t make it to the Grateful Dead Experience on Feb. 6, or the Chinese New Year Blowout Party on February 19, you really missed a couple of great parties.  At the Experience we auctioned off a framed photograph of the Dead playing at Watkins Glen, and we danced to the music of Big Rhythm Wine, an excellent Dead cover band.  At the Chinese New Year the 8-member Chandler Travis Philharmonic rocked the room, and we feasted on roast duck (hanging from the ceiling over the food table, and carved for each person by Monday Morning’s Old Folks Home DJ Bob Weiser) and Chinese noodles, with dumplings.  Chinese Tsingtao beer was available, and I had forgotten how delicious it is.  Over 90 people danced and hung out in the Davis Room.

Here this: coming up soon is the 28th Birthday Party of WOMR Community Radio: and all-day extravaganza, with food, drink, and the music of nine or ten local bands.  All day music and fun to celebrate WOMR.   The date is Friday, March 19th.    It looks, at this point, that the classic music duo who played for us in January on harp and flute will open up in the morning.  The fantastic Rip-It-Ups will close out the day from 6-8pm in the evening.  Yours truly, backed by blues band Steve Morgan and the Kingfish, will do a set sometime during the day, billed as The Rev and Friends.  Along the way you will hear The Flakes, The Electric Milk Machine, the Sarah Swain trio, Colonel Tom’s Elixer, some Klezmer music and some ukulele.  A variety reflecting the wide range of music you are used to hearing day and night on WOMR Community Radio.  The concert will be free, but we hope you will see fit to put something in the donation jar, as this is a benefit as well as a celebration, and we run on a very tight budget.

In April, we are featuring a Lon Chaney 127th birthday film event, a jazz concert, and a folk music appearance by Zoe Mulford.   Monday, May 17th, we have the real privilege of  hosting a benefit concert by a newly formed trio of well-known folk performers, Joe Jencks, Greg Greenway, and Pat Wictor.  They are doing the benefit this year for The Clothesline Project, Fighting Violence Against Women, and going on tour after that.   In June we join with the Provincetown Portuguese Festival, to host a music event on Thursday evening, June 24th, and to do a couple of live remotes from Festival events.  This is a brand new cooperative endeavor, which we hope continues for years to come.  We will be featured in their program material.  July will bring a big rock concert in the building at the end of Cabral Pier, on the Friday night of July 4th Week, July 9th.  This will be big; you will want to be there; stay tuned for details.  On Sunday, July 11th, in cooperation with, and at the Payoment, we will be presenting a concert by Crooked Still, the amazing five-piece festival band who have been wowing festival goers across the country for over five years.  Additionally, two more events may be added.  Stay tuned.

Things are progressing well with the repeater scheduled to go up in Orleans/Brewster in late Spring.   That will be the debut of WFMR, 91.3FM, which will broadcast WOMR Provincetown down through the rest of the Cape.  Details to follow.  Stay tuned.

We look forward to hosting a group of pre-scout, 6-7 year olds in the studio for a time on Saturday, March 27.
